How might the value of a collectible first edition of a book be affected when it's movie is being released?

For example, I have a 1st edition copy of Philip Roth's "American Pastoral" (which goes for $80-$300 retail). I see that they are making a movie about it in 2007 (date of release unknown). Will the book's value be higher now (before the movie is out), or after the movie is made and released? Thanks!

The amount of available copies does have an impact on how much your book is worth, but a more important factor is how many people out there want to buy it. If the movie turns out to be an absolute hit then the value of your book could certainly increase purely because there are many people that will suddenly want to read it, and some of them are folks that are looking for collectors items and are perfectly willing to pay whatever it costs to get ahold of it. Look at "Lord of the Rings"..before the movie it was a lesser read set of books, but I can guarantee you that first edition copies of those books are worth a bundle now...it's become a mainstream thing and there are a lot of rich folks out there that want them.

On its own steam your book may not be considered a classic..but it can instantly become in high demand, and therefore become more valuable. On the flip side though, if the movie bombs..there is a chance that the value could go down slightly.
