Can i use my Dell XP COA sticker serial number on a standard non branded version of xp?

I am reformatting my PC with XP and i have the Dell COA sticker on the side of the case but do not have the disc for this. Would it be possible for me to install another standard version of XP and use the Dell serial number?

windows xp used to be very strict when it comes to activation and coa however as long as the product key is not generated by a key gen or been used by another end user theres no reason why it shouldnt be accepted
when dell supply a recovery disk with the pc its basically a windows xp operating system thats been specificly editied by dell who add additional software thats installed during the installation
however its still windows xp thats installed and thus requires a product key
but what happend when you have lost your original recovery disk or windows xp disk?
well in theory you can get hold of any windows xp disk and then when prompted for a product key you can enter the key on your case
however some disks require you to enter the key specific to that disk to continue with the installation and then it will ask for the key again after set up has completed and thats when you can enter your product key from the side of your pc case
note : if you have a windows xp disk but dont have the product key for that disk you can locate the key for that disk using the following method :
1) Insert Windows XP cd into a working computer.
2) Exit the Autorun introduction.
3) Open "My Computer"
4) Right Click on the Windows XP cd-rom drive and select explore.
5) Open the USWXP32P_ZX folder.
6) Open the sysprep folder.
7) Open unattend.txt
Your CD's product key is contained within the unattend.txt file.
Note: On some system disks, USWXP32P_ZX is a hidden folder. If you cannot locate the folder, you may also search for unattend.txt and mark "Search Hidden Files".
however you only need to use this key to install windows xp ,you should use your product key on the c.o.a when prompted after windows xp installation is completed
basically karl all microsoft are concerned about is making sure that every copy of windows xp in the world are activated and 100% legal,however as we all know this is not true
and finally if your dell pc is still under warranty you can contact dell and ask them to send you a replacement recovery disk,and if under warranty they wont charge you a penny,however if the warranty has ended you can still get a replacement recovery disk for a minimal charge
