Apparently I have a fake version of Windows XP! If I get an authentic one, will that wipe out everything on my computer? And should I stick to XP or should I update to Vista? I want to get Linux too, so which is more compatible with Ubuntu?

It will delete everything if you reinstall. Work with microsoft either online or over the phone. They will give you a legitimate license and a way to install it without wiping out all of your data. I would hold off on Vista. Way too many bugs in it still.
